Giuliano Barbanti was born in 1936 in Sesto San Giovanni, Milan. From 1963 until 1970 he taught graphic art at the Instituto Rizzoli, and from 1969 until 1971 at the Instituto Superiore d’Arte Applicata del Castello. In 1976 he participated in the Venice Biennial, and has exhibited often at the National Biennial of the city of Milan, and at many European and Japanese Art Fairs. He has received Gold Medals in many Italian competitions.
His current work tends to be minimalist and very colorful. In earlier years, he experimented with “sfumato” with zones that changed shades, finally fading into the indistinct and the unknowable. By 1993, Barbanti had changed course, and began dealing with surfaces through the juxtaposition of flat and absolute colors, without any illusory optical effects.
